How to spot a fake gun giveaway
Most fake gun giveaways follow the same script. Once you know it, they're easy to spot.
Scam signs
- You have to pay to claim. "Just cover shipping," "pay the transfer fee to us," "small insurance fee." A real sponsor never asks the winner to send money. The only fee you may pay is your own FFL dealer's transfer fee, at their counter.
- "You won" in a DM or comment. Especially if you never entered, or the account messaging you isn't the brand's real account.
- A copycat account. Look at the handle closely. Extra letters, underscores, "official" or "giveaway" added to the name, few posts, and a recent join date are red flags.
- No official rules. A real giveaway has written rules naming the sponsor, the dates, who can enter and how the winner is picked.
- No end date or winner announcement. Real giveaways end on a stated date and say how winners will be told.
- They want odd details. Bank info, card numbers, your Social Security number before you've been confirmed as a winner, or login codes. Never send these through a DM.
- Payment by gift card, Cash App, Zelle or crypto. These are hard to reverse, which is why scammers ask for them.
- Rush and pressure. "Claim in 1 hour or it goes to the next person."
- The prize ships to your house. Guns from a giveaway go to a licensed FFL dealer. Anyone offering to mail a gun to your door is either lying or breaking the law.
What a real giveaway looks like
It's posted on the brand's own website or verified accounts. Entry is free. The rules are easy to find. The winner is contacted the way the rules say, and the gun is shipped to an FFL dealer, where the winner fills out ATF Form 4473 and passes a background check.
If you're unsure, go to the brand's website yourself (don't use the link in the message) and contact them through it.
How we keep scams off this site
Every listing on our giveaway list is checked by hand before it goes up. We confirm the sponsor is a real company, look for official rules, and make sure entry is free. Our full checklist is on the vetting page. Ones that look like they'll catch people go in the scam alerts.
